General Anil Chauhan on Friday (30 September) took over the charge of India’s new Chief of Defence Staff. As the CDS, he will also be the Principal Military Advisor to the Raksha Mantri on all Tri-Service matters as well as head of the Department of Military Affairs as its Secretary.

He will also be Permanent Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee (COSC). General Chauhan was selected to the post nearly 11 months after the untimely demise of India’s first CDS General Bipin Rawat.

Ahead of taking the charge, General Chauhan in an interaction with the media said that it was a matter of pride for him to be nominated as CDS.There are hopes and expectations among the three Services, government and citizens from the new CDS which, General Chauhan said, he would fulfil to the best of his abilities.He added that the security challenges facing the nation will be dealt with jointly by the Services.
